Sh Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Bharat Ratan and India’s Prime Minister for three times, A Politician with Voice, A profound Poet, and a true Gentleman, left for his heavenly journey on 16th Aug 2018. The mother land is grief-stricken for the loss of its Son, A party is sorrowful on losing a prudent and able leader, and this village in Himachal is mourning because it won’t get to see its most loved habitant, ever again!
Atal Bihari Vajpayee who remained a bachelor for his life, had a romantic relation with hills long before he became the Prime Minister of India. He adopted a village near Manali as his summer retreat and used to come here on regular basis. He was so in love with the place that we wrote a poem “Bulati Tumhe Manali”.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee called ‘Prini’ village in Manali, his second home. The people of Prini still cherish the memories of the former PM. Whenever he visited Prini, he used to meet people in-person breaking Prime minister’s protocol and listen to their issues however trivial they may be. The kids of the village loved him so much that they used to call him “Mama” (a hindi word for mother’s brother).
It is said that once when Atal Ji was not the PM of the country, kids went to him with some problems. Atal ji gave them 15000 Rs saying this was all he had since their Mama was jobless at that moment. He came to Prini last in year 2006. After that his health didn’t allow any visit.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a man with great sense of humility. No wonder people from all walks of life respect him, love him. There is an Institute of Mountaineering and allied sports in Manali named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He knew that winters are harsh in Hills and how Lahaul is cut from the rest of the world due to closure of Rohtang pass! Because of his affiliation with the place, affection for the natives, and the farsightedness being Country’s head, the famous project of Rohtang Tunnel was initiated. It is almost on completion.
