Are you wondering what’s going on here?

Let me tell you, ‘You are going on a long virtual trip with me on Oriental Afterglow in the month of April as I am telling you 26 interesting stories from our travels.

The name of this Trip is “When We Met”. Onboard, you’ll read how we met these 26 stations and how differently they treated us!

So… let’s not waste time and board the train to our very first stop-

A for Ahmedabad: The Boston of India

Ahmedabad was not at all a destination to begin with, it was just a crossing point. The stay was deliberately prolonged. Why? Well, It is Ahmedabad, one of the largest city of Gujarat and former capital! We wanted to see it!

Precisely, we spend 2 days in Ahmedabad.

What was The Plan for Ahmedabad?

  • Book a Hotel nearest to the railway station.
  • Go on a city tour run by AMTS on first day.
  • Watch movie in open air sunset drive-in cinema and do some street strolling second time.

What actually happened when We Met Ahmedabad?

Okay…so we landed in the city right in the mid of night. I was feeling proud of myself because this was why I wasted so many hours in front of the computer for the ideal location of the hotel. The high, soon went down, the moment I heard the Auto driver whisper to Mr Coolhead ‘this is not the kind of hotel you stay with family!’ ‘What does he mean?’ I thought. The scene from ’Jab we met’ movie flashed in front of my eyes. ‘oh…is it that …hourly type hotel? God…Please don’t let it be that! We have elders with is!!! Well…We checked in…and were given good rooms also…but obviously…the weird thoughts never left my waking mind free!

All went well and it was morning. There was plan to go for the city tour (I researched this on internet). Hotel people said that it is ‘Teen Darwaja’ where we need to go to get the bus which takes you on such a tour. Just to tell you- the city was pretty jam packed at that hour and to reach Teen Darwaja was like a big task which was somehow accomplished. The sight of plenty red colored buses gave a gush of excitement! However, it turned out later that nobody had any idea about a bus we were looking for! I mean really! Trust me when I say that no one was much interested to help either; and Inspite of huge number of buses, the Gujarati name plates only confused us further.

What do we do in such situation? Go to Google baba. We found the phone number of those AMTS people who responded after many unsuccessful attempts. It’s another thing they further added to the already messed up day by making a big announcement ‘It’s Monday and we are closed today!’ but then also asked us to come to Toran hotel as they would look for possibilties!

Toran hotel was pretty far (atleast in an auto it was), I think on the other end of the city. We went there and then the Man refused of even tiny possibility. The tour could not be arranged that day! Nice NO!

Internet pointed to Gandhi Aashram nearby which never closes. That was a relief other than this we had to literally kill our time roaming in a Mall which was again on the opposite side of the city!

So people, if you plan a tour to Ahmedabad, double check what day it is! Why I say this? Because some things are so interestingly destined in life. After travelling for significant nymber of days across Gujarat when we returned to Ahmedabad, and thought of spending some time there, it was again a Monday!

Awesome, isn’t it?

That’s all for today.

Stay tuned. Next, in the A to Z series is ‘B for bumpy’ ride to ‘B for Belgaum’.
